Value Gap

Outdated laws are hurting music creators

For one of the largest, innovative and profitable companies in the world to fail to fairly compensate artists while it uses their work to make a profit is simply wrong.

Google’s YouTube is the most popular music service in world, far bigger than Spotify, Apple or Pandora. However, rather than adopting the business practices of streaming services, Google has chosen to game a very old law (dating back to the glory days of dial-up internet and AOL) to make tons of cash selling ads around unlicensed copies of music, and then only pay pennies (or really fractions thereof) to the people who actually make the music.

Every time a song is streamed on YouTube, music creators earn significantly less than when the same song is streamed on services like Spotify. YouTube exploits outdated laws and loopholes in the law to pocket millions while cheating music creators out of fair compensation.

We have to close the value gap. Google has the means and the know-how to pay music creators fair market value for their work. It’s long past time they do so.
